Lungi, Sierra Leone – The Lungi United Family Association has taken a commendable step towards improving the environmental and living conditions in the area by initiating a massive cleanup of the town’s beaches. The effort comes in response to the overwhelming spread of seaweed along the coastline, which has been causing significant disruption to residents and visitors alike.
Seaweed has blanketed the beaches of Lungi, created not only an eyesore but also emitted an unpleasant odour that has raised health concerns among the locals. The association, recognizing the urgency of the issue, has mobilized its members and community volunteers to restore the beaches to their natural beauty and ensure a healthier environment for all.
During the launch of the initiative, Mr. Mohamed Lamin Sankoh, the chairman and a key representative of the association, emphasized the need for collective action. “We believe that it is our responsibility as members of this community to render support to the people of Lungi. The current state of the beaches is affecting everyone, and it is only right that we come together to tackle the problem and improve our surroundings,” Koroma stated.
The cleanup initiative aims to remove the accumulated seaweed and reduce the unpleasant odour that has disturbed residents for weeks. Volunteers are working diligently to ensure that the beaches can once again become spaces for recreation, tourism, and community activities.
The Lungi United Family Association is also calling on other local organizations, businesses, and government bodies to join the effort, stressing that the challenge requires collaborative participation. They hope that this project will not only enhance the appearance of the beaches but also raise awareness about the importance of maintaining clean and sustainable environments.
With the removal of seaweed and continued efforts to prevent similar occurrences, the association is optimistic that Lungi will regain its appeal as a peaceful and attractive destination for both residents and tourists.
The initiative by the Lungi United Family Association reflects a broader message: environmental stewardship is everyone’s responsibility. Their efforts serve as an inspiring example of how community-driven actions can bring about meaningful change.
