The Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU), in collaboration with key security institutions, destroyed a large consignment of illicit drugs valued at an estimated US$1.5 million as part of ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and substance abuse in Sierra Leone.
The destruction exercise brought together senior government officials, security sector representatives, development partners, civil society organizations, and members of the media. The destroyed substances included cocaine, tramadol, tapentadol, cannabis, expired pharmaceutical products, and other prohibited drugs confiscated during various law enforcement operations.
Speaking at the event, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Executive Director Andrew Kaikai disclosed that narcotics worth approximately US$1,525,000, including large quantities of marijuana and cocaine, were destroyed.
Kaikai described the exercise as an important demonstration of transparency and accountability in the country’s fight against illicit drugs, noting that it also helps strengthen public confidence in the justice system.
He emphasized that the fight against drug trafficking requires collective action from all sectors of society.
