Makeni, Sierra Leone – The Women in the Media Sierra Leone (WIMSAL) successfully held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Makeni, Bombali District, under the theme: “The Role of Women in Media and Gender Equality: The Future of Women in Media Sierra Leone.”
The two-day event, held at the UNIMAK Auditorium, brought together members of WIMSAL from across the country to discuss key issues affecting women in journalism and chart a path toward greater gender inclusivity in the media industry.
Day 1: Opening Ceremony and Thematic Discussions
The AGM commenced with an official opening ceremony, featuring remarks from distinguished guests and stakeholders. The discussions on Day 1 centered on the event’s theme, emphasizing the crucial role of women in shaping the media landscape and advocating for gender equality.
Speakers addressed challenges faced by female journalists, including workplace discrimination, limited leadership opportunities, and safety concerns. Panel discussions explored ways to strengthen WIMSAL’s advocacy efforts, enhance professional development for female journalists, and promote ethical journalism. Members were encouraged to actively engage in national conversations on media freedom and gender representation.
Day 2: Administrative Proceedings and Financial Accountability
The second day of the AGM was dedicated to internal administrative discussions and financial accountability. The closed-door session, exclusively for WIMSAL members, began with an opening prayer, followed by the reading of the 2023 AGM minutes by Secretary General, Marian Tina Conteh. Members reviewed and made necessary corrections before adopting the minutes and addressing matters arising.
A major highlight of the session was the presentation of financial reports covering March 2023 to March 2024. National Financial Secretary, Rachel Williams, delivered a comprehensive financial update, moderated by Northern Chairperson, Edna Amie Ngegba. Additionally, regional representatives from WIMSAL North, South, and East presented their respective annual financial reports for 2023–2024, ensuring transparency and accountability within the association.
The session also featured the Statement of the Association Report (2023–2024), delivered by WIMSAL President, Madam Eastina B. Taylor.
President’s Statement: Strengthening Women’s Role in Media
In her address, Madam Eastina B. Taylor reaffirmed WIMSAL’s commitment to empowering female journalists, promoting gender equality, and fostering a more inclusive media industry.
“As women in media, our voices must remain strong and impactful. We must continue to break barriers, challenge stereotypes, and advocate for fair representation. WIMSAL remains committed to creating opportunities that uplift and empower women in our profession,” she stated.
She further emphasized the need for greater support, inclusivity, and policy reforms to ensure a more equitable media environment in Sierra Leone. She encouraged members to remain committed to WIMSAL’s mission, stressing the importance of unity, accountability, and professional excellence.Way Forward
The AGM concluded with key deliberations on strengthening WIMSAL’s strategic plans, enhancing professional development programs, and increasing advocacy efforts for gender equity in the media sector.
The event reaffirmed WIMSAL’s role as a leading voice for women in media and set the stage for continued progress in advancing gender equality within Sierra Leone’s media industry.
The program climaxed with a dinner and awards night, celebrating the achievements of outstanding female journalists and recognizing individuals who have contributed to the growth and success of WIMSAL.
