The United States Embassy in Freetown, Sierra Leone, has officially transferred a state-of-the-art National Parasitic Diseases Laboratory and Training Center to the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s healthcare landscape.
the multimillion-leone facility, funded by U.S. AFRICOM and constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, was made possible through a Humanitarian Assistance grant from the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative. The Ministry of Health and Sanitation has warmly welcomed this development, expressing heartfelt gratitude to the U.S. Embassy and the Government of the United States for their unwavering support.
The new center is poised to revolutionize health services by training professionals and enhancing community health across Sierra Leone, where malaria remains a deadly threat. During the handover ceremony, Chargé d’Affaires Jared Yancey emphasized the facility’s broader impact, stating, This laboratory and training center is not just an investment in Sierra Leone’s future it is an investment by the American people in global health security. The United States has consistently supported Sierra Leone’s development and partnership, and this represents a vital opportunity for its people.” The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that millions globally succumb to malaria via mosquito bites, underscoring the urgency of such initiatives.
This collaboration highlights a commitment to combating parasitic diseases and strengthening healthcare infrastructure, promising a healthier future for Sierra Leoneans.
