The aviation industry in Sierra Leone is experiencing significant advancements, particularly at the Freetown International Airport, where recent developments are transforming it into a hub of modernity and efficiency. These strides, according to senior staff members, are expected to position the airport as a critical gateway for international travel and commerce, attracting more visitors and investors to the country.
One of the key highlights of these developments is the construction of a brand-new airport, featuring state-of-the-art facilities. This includes a new control tower building, a modern terminal building, a cargo building, an administrative building, new bridges for pilots, and a solar farm. Unisa Kamara, a senior staff member of the aviation industry, emphasized that these upgrades have extended the width and length of the runway, allowing it to accommodate larger aircraft capable of making turns in the loop.
“These improvements not only enhance our capacity to handle bigger aircraft but also increase the volume of air traffic, which is crucial for boosting our economy by attracting more people and investors to Sierra Leone,” Kamara stated.
Furthermore, the airport now boasts two aprons. Apron One is designed to accommodate commercial aircraft, while Apron Two is situated near the Presidential Lodge, serving specific needs related to high-profile visits. This distinction underscores the airport’s growing versatility and its readiness to meet diverse demands.
Kamara also highlighted the global recognition these developments are bringing to the Freetown International Airport. “People from different parts of the world are now aware that our airport has all the necessary facilities to attract more aircraft. For instance, the terminal building is capable of accommodating a significant number of passengers, and our fire department is fully equipped to handle any fire emergencies,” he explained.
Security has also seen remarkable improvement, now operating as an independent body, which is a departure from its previous management under Westminster. Kamara proudly shared that after a thorough audit, the industry achieved a 70% rating—an unprecedented accomplishment in the airport’s history. This high score reflects the airport’s adherence to international standards across various sectors, further cementing its reputation as a modern and reliable aviation hub.
With these advancements, the Freetown International Airport is not just expanding in infrastructure but also enhancing its operational capabilities, making it a key player in the global aviation industry. These developments are a testament to Sierra Leone’s commitment to progress and its vision of becoming a leading destination for air travel in West Africa.
