On Monday, April 28, 2025, a tragic incident devastated the tranquil community of Mayeima, opposite the Grafton Brigade, when a perimeter fence collapsed, claiming one life and leaving two others injured.
Eyewitnesses reported that the collapse occurred around 11 p.m., with the wall suddenly crashing into three adjacent residential buildings, catching the occupants by surprise. Local residents and emergency responders promptly mobilized, working together to free those trapped beneath the debris.
I heard a thunderous crash and rushed outside to see what had happened. It was terrifying part of the wall had completely crushed a section of the house next door, recounted Foday Kamara, a Mayeima resident. We worked frantically to pull people out while awaiting the arrival of the rescue team.
Tragically, one person was pronounced dead at the scene, two others sustained injuries and were immediately transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment, the identity of the deceased has not been disclosed, pending notification of their next of kin.
On Tuesday morning, government officials, including representatives from the Ministry of Works and the Office of National Security, visited the site to assess the damage and initiate preliminary investigations. While the cause of the collapse remains under review, some residents expressed concerns about the wall’s structural integrity, particularly in the context of recent heavy rainfall.
This is a deeply sorrowful event. We are committed to understanding the cause of this tragedy and ensuring measures are implemented to prevent future incidents,” said a government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
As of press time, authorities have not released an official statement, but a comprehensive investigation is reportedly underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
The Mayeima community remains in mourning, grappling with the profound loss caused by the disaster. Families and neighbors have united to offer support and comfort to those affected, reflecting the strength and solidarity of this close-knit community in the face of tragedy.
