Freetown – The Tourism Department, Brookfields Campus of Milton Margai Technical University, wishes to officially clarify and reaffirm its role in the recently concluded educational tour to Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary.
This initiative was solely facilitated and coordinated by the Tourism Department as part of its academic strategy to expose students to key components of community-based tourism, wildlife conservation, and park management. The trip was an internal departmental effort designed to enhance practical learning and field experience for tourism students.
We wish to make it explicitly clear that the tour was not organized or sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, although we acknowledge and appreciate the Ministry’s broader support in lodging in one of the places visited, and also for tourism education in Sierra Leone.
The visit to Tiwai Island gave students a unique opportunity to engage directly with conservation experts, community stakeholders, and park management teams, reinforcing classroom knowledge with real-world application. Activities included guided eco-tours, wildlife observation, and interactive sessions focused on sustainable tourism practices and environmental stewardship.
As a department, we remain committed to delivering high-quality, practice-oriented education that prepares our students to become competent and environmentally responsible professionals in the tourism sector.
We thank the Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary team and the surrounding communities for their collaboration and support in making this educational experience impactful and memorable.
