In a landmark healthcare initiative, the Surgeon in Action Foundation, a renowned Spanish-based medical charity, on May 17, 2025, Surgeon in Action Foundation has partnered with the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) Hospital to provide free surgical operations and modern medical equipment dramatically improving access to essential healthcare services for police personnel, their families, and surrounding communities.
spearheaded under the leadership of Inspector General of Police William Fayia Sellu, the collaboration aims to strengthen medical care within the police force and extend vital services to underserved areas across the country. ASP Dr. John Mumuneh Konteh, Medical Superintendent of the SLP Hospital, has played a pivotal role in expanding this initiative to remote police divisions in Bonthe, Lungi, Kono, and Kailahun.
As part of this humanitarian drive, the foundation donated surgical equipment valued at over $70,000 USD, significantly upgrading the hospital’s surgical and diagnostic capabilities. The impact was immediate and far-reaching: 199 patients including police officers, their relatives, and civilians received free surgical treatment for a range of conditions, the surgical procedures performed included, 143 hernia repairs, 27 thyroidectomies, 19 lipoma removals, 1 orchidectomy, 1 goitre removal, 1 hernioplasty,1 cystectomy
The visiting medical team expressed their deep appreciation for the warm reception by SLP management and reaffirmed their long-term commitment to enhancing Sierra Leone’s healthcare landscape.
Highlighting their focus on sustainable development, the foundation also announced a full scholarship for a staff member of the SLP Hospital to pursue advanced training in a specialized medical field. This gesture reflects the organization’s broader goal of strengthening local medical expertise and ensuring long-lasting impact beyond short-term missions.
This partnership marks a significant step in improving healthcare delivery in Sierra Leone, particularly for institutions serving both law enforcement and civilian populations.
