The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has announced major security and operational upgrades ahead of the festive season, including the installation of surveillance cameras across Aberdeen and Lumley Beaches and the introduction of four containers of new standard police uniforms. Both initiatives are part of ongoing reforms championed by Inspector General of Police, Mr. William Fayia Sellu.
In a proactive move to strengthen public safety, the SLP has completed the installation of modern surveillance cameras along the Aberdeen–Lumley beach corridor. 3rd December 2025, the system covers entry points, entertainment centres, and high-traffic areas where thousands of citizens and visitors are expected to gather during Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Police officials say the cameras will enable real-time monitoring, faster response to emergencies, and improved protection for holidaymakers.
Residents, beach operators, and tourists have welcomed the development, praising IGP Sellu for his leadership and forward-thinking approach. Many described the initiative as timely, given the rise in criminal activities normally associated with festive gatherings.
During the weekly press briefing at the Kingtom Police Mess, the SLP also announced the arrival of four containers of full-kit combat uniforms, a major achievement under the Force’s 2025 2029 Strategic Development Plan.
The new uniforms offloaded at the Police Field in Kingtom include complete camouflage kits, new boots, belts, and other operational accessories designed to improve officer appearance, discipline, and functionality.
IGP Sellu said the introduction of standard uniforms marks the end of the era when officers wore mismatched colours and inconsistent attire, uniformity reinforces discipline and strengthens public confidence. From today, we are moving towards a single, professional, and easily identifiable police appearance across the country.”
He added that police officers have faced long-standing challenges in acquiring decent, matching uniforms and boots. The new uniform package, combined with the existing blue-black, white, and blue sets, will ensure officers are adequately equipped for their duties.
The Inspector General further disclosed that the government has also supplied non-lethal crowd-control equipment, assuring the public that future riot-control operations will prioritise the safety of both officers and civilians.
According to SLP leadership, the combined investment in technology-based surveillance and professional police presentation demonstrates the Force’s determination to deliver a safe and peaceful festive season.
With increased visibility, improved equipment, and a strengthened presence around major recreational areas, the Sierra Leone Police say it is ready to maintain order and protect lives throughout December and beyond.
