SLP Reveals NLe 576 Million Budget to Boost Security for 2026–2028

By Emma Black

The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has unveiled its Mid-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) Budget for the fiscal years 2026–2028, totaling Le 576,023,180, during a significant presentation at the Ministry of Finance Hall on George Street, Freetown.

Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, David Fortune, addressed the gathering, emphasizing the essential role of security in building a stronger nation. He reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to delivering accountable and effective policing, noting that sufficient funding is crucial to sustain SLP operations, which include visibility policing, emergency response, community engagement, and daily patrols.

Inspector General of Police, Mr. William Fayia Sellu, expressed his pride in presenting this well-structured budget, which aligns with the SLP’s Strategic Development Plan. He thanked his team for their hard work and stressed that public safety and security remain the SLP’s top priorities, urging the government and Ministry of Finance to provide the necessary support. ACP Alieu Turay, Director of Support Services, echoed this sentiment, highlighting security’s role in development and calling for budget approval. He detailed the SLP’s mission to protect lives and property, maintain law and order, and uphold human rights.

The 2026 budget includes ambitious plans such as renovating and upgrading the SLP Headquarters to improve service delivery, recruiting 1,000 new police personnel, purchasing 35 4×4 vehicles for nationwide patrols, modernizing the SLP garment factory into a uniform production center, and supplying camouflage uniforms for the Operations Support Division (OSD) personnel.

Mr. Jah, Director of Budget Services, commended ACP Turay’s comprehensive presentation and assured a thorough review. The budget proposal sparked a lively debate among financial analysts, civil society, NGOs, media, and the public, who praised the SLP’s efforts and strongly supported their funding request. This budget promises to enhance security across Sierra Leone, and I look forward to its positive outcomes for our communities.
