The Sierra Leone police (SLP) training directorate have successfully concluded a large-scale capacity-building programme for over 2,500 officers across the Freetown-East police region, focusing on Anti-corruption measures and the recently enacted criminal procedure Act (CPA) 2024.
The training, spearheaded by assistant commissioner of Police (ACP) Joe Kamanda Bongay, director of training, combined traditional classroom sessions at Kingtom with an innovative mobile coaching approach, this approach brought facilitators directly to police stations and posts throughout the region, ensuring broad participation and inclusivity, and allowing officers of all ranks to benefit from the initiative.
Each mobile session, lasting about one and a half hours, featured comparative analyses between the repealed CPA and the new 2024 Act, facilitators emphasized key reforms within the legislation designed to enhance fairness, justice, and the protection of vulnerable groups in the judicial process.
In addition to legal updates, officers engaged in interactive discussions on anti-corruption ethics, accountability mechanisms, and the critical role of integrity in modern policing, the sessions encouraged open dialogue on how ethical conduct can strengthen public trust in law enforcement.
Local unit commanders (LUCs) across the region commended the training Directorate for the programme’s practical structure and relevance to real-world policing challenges, many recommended that similar training initiatives be replicated in other police regions across the country.
The mobile training team included deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Alpha Kamara, chief inspector Abdul Rahman Sankoh, chief inspector Aminata F. Kabba, and sergeant Mohamed Fofana, all of whom played key roles in delivering the sessions and ensuring the programme’s overall success.
The initiative marks a significant step in strengthening police professionalism, promoting accountability, and equipping officers with the knowledge needed to uphold justice and transparency under the new criminal procedure Act.
