Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko arrived in Sierra Leone on Monday 2 June 2025 for an official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation, particularly in the energy and mining sectors, he was welcomed at the Freetown International Airport by Sierra Leone’s Vice President, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh.
The visit builds on earlier discussions held in Dakar on April 22, 2024, focused on achieving food and energy sovereignty, developing a regional mineral hub in Sierra Leone, and fostering private sector investment and trade between the two West African nations.
Speaking at a state dinner held in honor of the visiting delegation, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Frances Piagie Alghali, described the visit as a strong testament to the growing collaboration between Sierra Leone and Senegal. She assured the Prime Minister of a warm and productive stay.
Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s dedication to strengthening its ties with Senegal, emphasizing the importance of shared development goals and economic cooperation.
In his remarks, Prime Minister Sonko expressed gratitude for the warm reception he received and reflected on the fruitful conversations that have shaped this visit. He referenced President Julius Maada Bio’s attendance at the inauguration of Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, highlighting the symbolic and strategic significance of that gesture.
You invited me to come to Freetown so we could consolidate the discussions we had during your stay in Dakar, Sonko said. I commend this initiative and extend my appreciation to his Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio, who honored us with his presence during President Faye’s inauguration.”
Prime Minister Sonko further noted that the visit is part of a broader effort to deepen economic relations between the two countries, especially in areas that can stimulate job creation and sustainable growth, the visit continues with high-level meetings between Senegalese and Sierra Leonean officials, focusing on actionable steps for collaboration in the energy and mining sectors, as well as broader trade and investment opportunities.
