Security Chiefs Meet to Boost Police-Military Partnership

By Emma Black

In a significant move to deepen security collaboration, Lieutenant General Amara Idara Bangura, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces, on Friday, 11 July 2025 paid a courtesy visit to Inspector General of Police (IGP) William Fayia Sellu at the Senior Police Officers’ Mess, Kingtom Police Barracks.

Accompanied by a delegation of newly promoted senior military officers, Lieutenant General Bangura’s visit was warmly received and described by IGP Sellu as a historic step toward enhancing cooperation and unity between the police and military forces.

IGP Sellu extended congratulations to the newly promoted officers and emphasized the vital role of inter-agency collaboration in national security.

“No single agency can ensure security alone. One’s strength complements the other’s weakness,” he said, highlighting the ongoing Police-Military Cooperation (POMIC) training program as a cornerstone for effective joint operations across the country.

He also proposed launching regular joint social activities to build camaraderie and strengthen bonds between members of both forces.

Responding, Lieutenant General Bangura stressed that lasting peace and security depend on seamless coordination between the police and military. Like two hands clapping, our partnership is essential for stability, he remarked.

The CDS highlighted key joint successes, including the recent deployment of motorbikes to enhance patrols at border crossings. He noted that visible cooperation has increased public trust in Sierra Leone’s security services.

Lieutenant General Bangura further acknowledged President Dr. Julius Maada Bio’s praise of the strong collaboration between the armed forces and police. He encouraged military commanders to foster similar partnerships with police units across the regions.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to form a technical cooperation team tasked with organizing professional and social engagements to further strengthen institutional ties.

Both leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment to work closely in safeguarding Sierra Leone’s peace, security, and national development.
