The Government of Sierra Leone’s School Feeding Programme, a key component of the Free Quality Education initiative, has officially commenced across designated districts for the 2025/2026 academic year.

In Bo District, consignments of rice, oil, beans, and salt have already arrived and are safely stored for distribution. According to local arrangements, parents are expected to contribute additional condiments to help prepare nutritious meals for pupils each school day.

Speaking to this medium, Segbe Coker, the National coordinator of the programme, explained that last year’s delay was caused by late payments to suppliers. suppliers were not paid on time for the previous academic year, which led to the delay, but this supply is now ready to roll out as soon as possible, he confirmed.

The school feeding programme has proven to be an effective tool in boosting school attendance and retention, while also providing employment opportunities for community members particularly among low-income households.

Children are always eager to attend school, especially when they know they will receive a hot meal, said Mr. Edwards, Headteacher of Holy spirit primary school in Kowa chiefdom, it not only encourages regular attendance but also improves classroom performance.

Development partners, including the World Food Programme (WFP), China, South Korea, and other international supporters, continue to play a vital role in sustaining this impactful initiative since its inception.

The government hopes that the timely restart of the school feeding programme will further strengthen education outcomes and community resilience across the country.
