In a proactive effort to combat the spread of Mpox, the humanitarian organization Save the orphan has donated infection prevention and control (IPC) materials to three schools in Bo town, Tianbet International school, united Brethren in christ School, and Sluim Primary School.
The initiative, carried out in collaboration with the Bo district health medical team, aims to raise awareness and promote preventive practices among schoolchildren and staff in response to the ongoing Mpox outbreak affecting communities across Sierra Leone.
The donated items include handwashing stations, disinfectants, gloves, and educational materials designed specifically for school environments. representatives from Save the orphan and the district health medical team visited the beneficiary schools to conduct health talks and interactive sessions, emphasizing the importance of hygiene, early detection, and prompt reporting of symptoms.
This donation is part of our broader mission to protect vulnerable children and ensure schools remain safe learning environments, said a spokesperson for Save the orphan, with the increasing threat of Mpox, it’s vital that we educate and empower our communities especially our young people to prevent its spread.
School administrators welcomed the gesture and highlighted the importance of such interventions as pupils return to in-person learning, they noted that maintaining a hygienic school environment is essential for both health and academic continuity.
Mr. Abdulai Conteh, a representative of the Bo district health medical team, praised the partnership, we are proud to collaborate with organizations like Save the orphan in responding proactively to public health threats, community-level awareness and prevention are key to controlling Mpox.
This joint effort underscores the importance of partnerships between civil society organizations and public health authorities in addressing emerging health challenges, it also highlights the crucial role schools play as platforms for health education and disease prevention in Sierra Leone.
