A significant event recently unfolded in the picturesque town of Sandugu, located in Karane District, as the Chieftaincy election, long awaited by the community, finally took place in Sanda Magbolontor Chiefdom.
The election process was overseen with dedication by Returning Officer Commissioner Augustine and his team, ensuring a structured voting experience. Unofficial results sparked excitement and debate, with Sankoh Jim Abu leading with 218 votes (27.1%) and Sesay Umar Abdulai following with 189 votes (24%). The atmosphere grew charged as supporters from both sides passionately discussed the outcome, creating a tense standoff.
Responding to the unrest, Commissioner Augustine addressed the crowd, explaining that logistical challenges and the need for new electoral materials required a delay, necessitating a runoff between the top two candidates. Despite his efforts to soothe tensions, unease lingered, though the Port Loko Police Division, under the Local Unit Commander (LUC) and the Kamakwie team, swiftly intervened to maintain order and prevent escalation.
As the community awaits the official runoff date, the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL) faces the task of ensuring transparency and fairness. Rumors of tribalism and corruption have surfaced, with allegations that divisive rhetoric threatens the Chiefdom’s unity, home to the Limba, Temne, and Fula ethnic groups. Stakeholders revealed to me that one side has dominated leadership for over 70 years, leaving some feeling marginalized and calling for a change to test the other side’s governance.
Sankoh Jim Abu’s campaign manager, Mr. Gbassay Kamara, advocated for a leadership shift to foster democracy and unity, while Sesay Umar Abdulai urged his supporters to stay calm and respect ECSL rules, offering a hopeful outlook for the runoff. This election underscores the delicate balance of tradition and governance, with the Chiefdom’s resilience and the authorities’ actions preserving peace as they look toward a prosperous future.
