The President of the Police Wives Association (PWA), Mrs. Matilda Doris Sellu, has launched a nationwide outreach tour aimed at strengthening transparency, accountability, and collective decision-making among police wives across Sierra Leone.
The tour, which began on Monday 9 February 2026, reflects Mrs. Sellu’s commitment to open leadership and regular engagement with members of the Association. During visits to police barracks in different regions, she has been providing detailed updates on the Association’s activities, finances, and development initiatives.
Addressing members during the engagements, Mrs. Sellu presented a comprehensive financial report on proceeds from the Association’s most recent social outing. She revealed that a total sum of Le 525,000 was realised, from which Le 375,000 was deposited into the Association’s bank account after operational costs such as feeding and transportation were deducted.
She stressed that the utilisation of the available funds would not be decided unilaterally but through a democratic process, allowing members to vote and agree collectively on priority projects. In addition, Mrs. Sellu announced plans for a major fundraising feast scheduled for 5 April 2026, intended to mobilise additional resources to support the welfare needs of police families in barracks nationwide.
Reflecting on the Association’s achievements under her leadership, Mrs. Sellu highlighted the successful construction of boreholes in several police barracks using proceeds from earlier activities. The facilities were installed at Kissy, Jui, Mayeamy and Kossoh Town in the Western Area, as well as in Makeni, Magburaka, Lunsar, Kailahun, Kenema, and the Old Police Barracks in Bo. She explained that the projects were designed to improve access to clean and safe drinking water for police families and nearby communities.
Mrs. Sellu also drew attention to the newly introduced micro-loan scheme, which has been rolled out to police wives across the country. The initiative aims to support small-scale businesses, enhance household income, and promote financial stability among beneficiaries.
Her leadership style has attracted praise from both senior and junior officers of the Sierra Leone Police, as well as members of the PWA. Several officers with over three decades of service noted that the level of openness, financial disclosure, and regular reporting currently practiced within the Association is unprecedented.
Reaffirming her leadership philosophy, Mrs. Sellu said her administration is anchored on honesty, consultation, and service delivery, ensuring that all proceeds from social and fundraising activities are properly accounted for and directed towards meaningful welfare interventions.
Beneficiaries at various barracks have expressed appreciation for the borehole projects, noting that improved access to clean water has significantly enhanced living conditions and overall well-being within police communities.
The nationwide transparency and accountability tour is ongoing and has so far covered police divisions in Lungi, Port Loko, Kambia, Lunsar, and Makeni.
