Prison Court, which started its session in Kenema on Tuesday, June 4th, 2024, ended its session on June 6th, 2024. Eighty-one (81) sentenced inmates were discharged by the presiding High Court Judge, Justice Abubakarr Sannoh, while forty-four (44) sentenced inmate cases were reviewed, with thirty sentenced inmate cases maintained and seventy-four cases unattended to among the two hundred and twenty-nine (229) sentenced inmate cases enlisted for the session.
High Court Judge, Justice Abubakarr Sannoh, in his address to the inmates at the Sierra Leone Correctional Centre in Kenema, said his target was not to set then free but to free those who were over sentenced by the Magistrates in the Lower Court, adding that they are humans and liable to mistakes.
The Judge told the mammoth crowd of inmates serving their jail terms and those remanded to be tried at the Magistrate Court and High that the prison court was organised by the Judiciary and the Government of Sierra Leone in collaboration with other organisations to decongest the correctional centres in the country, noting that their concentration is not the high court but the magistrate court. Some sentenced detainees were discharged on medical grounds and those whose sentences were about to end.
Justice Abubakarr Sannoh admonished released inmates to be responsible citizens in their communities, be law-abiding and to desist from doing anything that can lead then into trouble.
