His Excellency the President Brigadier (Rtd) Julius Maada Bio has welcomed the recognition of Sierra Leone by the Government of Switzerland for upholding the Geneva Conventions and international humanitarian law.
The President said on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, 29th August, 2024, that Sierra Leone has experienced challenges, but has always been resilient in overcoming such challenges.
“I am grateful for the recognition by the Government of Switzerland of Sierra Leone’s continued commitment to upholding the Geneva Conventions and International Humanitarian Law. Our peaceful nation has survived the crucible of war and emerged a stronger and more inclusive and progressive democracy,” he said.
Holding the iconic Geneva Convention chair with his Vice President Dr Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, President Bio noted that: “This 124-year-old chair is a testament of resilience. But it is also an enduring reminder that through 75 years, and in the future, we will carry on confirming Sierra Leone’s firm commitment to upholding the Geneva Conventions and International Humanitarian Law.”
Sierra Leone is a signatory to several Geneva Conventions and has been supportive in advocating for and maintain global peace and security. The country experienced an eleven-year civil war which ended in 2002. It has also experienced major disease outbreaks, natural disasters, among others. However, the country has always bounce back as it is a bastion of religious tolerance, hospitality, among other social assets. The nation has been the president for the United Nations Security Council for the whole of this August.
