President Bio Stands Firm on Rule of Law

By Josephine Sesay

Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio is steadfast in his commitment to the rule of law and constitutional integrity, according to Minister of Information and Civic Education Chernor Bah, addressing journalists in Freetown, the minister emphatically quashed speculation about a potential third-term bid, reaffirming the President’s dedication to democratic principles.

President Bio has no intention none whatsoever of pursuing a third term or tampering with presidential term limits, Bah asserted, his priority is to fortify our democracy, not weaken it.

The remarks come as the government advances a constitutional review process, sparking public debate about its intent. Minister Bah was quick to clarify that the initiative is not a ploy to extend power but a deliberate effort to modernize the 1991 Constitution, this is about adapting our foundational document to meet the demands of 21st-century Sierra Leone, he explained, we’re strengthening governance and aligning it with the needs of our people today.

Led by a coalition of legal experts, civil society leaders, and political stakeholders, the review aims to tackle pressing issues bolstering checks and balances, enhancing civil liberties, and safeguarding human rights, far from a power grab, the process is framed as a forward-looking step to secure Sierra Leone’s democratic future.

Bah urged citizens to take an active role in the review, emphasizing that collective input is vital to shaping a resilient constitutional framework, this is a shared responsibility, he said, your voice will define the path ahead.

Under President Bio’s leadership, the administration has cast itself as a torchbearer for reform, transparency, and accountable governance, as Sierra Leone charts its democratic course, this renewed focus on constitutional order is widely viewed as a cornerstone for enduring stability and progress.
