President Bio Directs Labour Ministry to Begin Minimum Wage Negotiations

President Dr. Julius Maada Bio has instructed the Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security to launch negotiations for a new national minimum wage, this move aimed at enhancing workers’ dignity and economic wellbeing, the directive was announced during the National Labour Conference, held at the Miatta Conference Centre in Freetown on International Workers’ Day, May 1, 2025, marking a significant step in Sierra Leone’s labor policy reform.

In his keynote address to stakeholders, including labor leaders, employers, and government officials, President Bio highlighted the inseparable connection between dignified labor and access to quality education, healthcare, and sustainable livelihoods. He commended Sierra Leonean workers for their resilience amid economic and social challenges, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to their welfare.

It is in recognition of these realities that I have directed the ministry of employment, Labour and Social Security to commence negotiations for a new minimum wage, President Bio declared, this is not a political gesture but a fundamental step toward ensuring every worker can live with dignity.”

The President also addressed the critical role of the informal sector, which employs a significant portion of Sierra Leone’s workforce, he outlined plans to integrate informal workers into the formal economy, ensuring they benefit from protections and opportunities, my government is accelerating efforts to extend national social security coverage to informal sector workers, providing millions of Sierra Leoneans with access to vital social safety nets,” he said.

Looking to the future, President Bio articulated a vision for a Sierra Leone where labor is respected, innovation fuels inclusive growth, and every worker’s contribution is valued as essential to national progress, we are building a nation where the dignity of work is a source of pride,” he stated. “I call on all citizens to join us in realizing a fairer, more inclusive Sierra Leone.

The National Labour Conference, a highlight of International Workers’ Day celebrations, provided a platform for dialogue among government, labor unions, and employers. President Bio’s directive sets the stage for collaborative negotiations to establish a minimum wage that reflects Sierra Leone’s economic realities and workers’ needs.

As the Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security prepares to initiate these talks, the announcement has sparked hope among workers and unions, signaling a renewed commitment to improving labor conditions and fostering economic equity across the nation.
