Port Loko Regional Hospital Set for 24-Hour Electricity with New Solar Power Installation

By Thaimu T Kamara

The Port Loko Regional Hospital is on the brink of a major transformation as it prepares to receive a reliable 24-hour electricity supply, made possible by the installation of a 100 kVA solar power system, this development marks a significant milestone in efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery in Sierra Leone.

In an interview with Expo Times N ewspaper the hospital’s Medical Superintendent, Dr. Yusuf Sheku Tejan, expressed deep appreciation to the government of Sierra Leone especially the Ministry of Health and Sanitation for prioritizing healthcare infrastructure, particularly at the Port Loko Regional Hospital. He noted that the solar installation will enable the facility to operate continuously, delivering critical health services to thousands of residents in Port Loko and surrounding communities.

Dr. Tejan also praised the vital contributions of international partners such as Sustainable Energy for All and UK international development, whose support helped bring the project to life, this is not just an energy project it is a healthcare lifeline, he said, with solar power, we are not only improving service reliability but also promoting sustainability and cost-efficiency in hospital operations.

The solar facility is currently undergoing load testing to ensure it meets the hospital’s power demands under real-life conditions, this testing phase is essential to verify that the system can fully support essential services such as surgical theaters, intensive care units, and medical laboratories without interruption.

We are committed to thorough testing before the official commissioning, Dr. Tejan explained, his safety and care of our patients come first, and we must ensure every unit functions seamlessly.”

The commissioning ceremony, to be led by the Ministry of Health and its development partners, is expected to be a momentous occasion. It will symbolize the collaborative spirit between the government, international agencies, and healthcare workers to improve service delivery in underserved regions.

Dr. Tejan expressed hope that this achievement would serve as a model for other hospitals nationwide, this project shows what’s possible when we invest in renewable energy and public health. It’s a powerful step toward a healthier, more resilient Sierra Leone.

The solar installation at Port Loko Regional Hospital reflects a broader national push to close the energy gap in critical public institutions. As the system nears completion, it stands as a beacon of innovation, collaboration, and commitment to healthcare excellence paving the way for more sustainable and effective medical services in Sierra Leone’s future.
