The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) Hospital has welcomed forty nursing and midwifery students from Njala University for a 12-week internship, marking the largest intake of student interns in the hospital’s history.
The Deputy Medical Director and Medical Superintendent of the SLP Hospital, ASP Dr. John Mumuneh Konteh, introduced the interns, noting that Njala University has consistently sent students for practical training, but this year’s cohort represents a milestone. He added that the students will be evaluated at the conclusion of the programme.
Speaking at the event, Inspector General of Police (IGP) William Fayia Sellu hailed the internship as a significant achievement for the Police Hospital, which he described as one of Sierra Leone’s leading medical facilities. He encouraged the interns to approach their training with discipline and professionalism, emphasizing that they represent their families, their university, and the hospital.
IGP Sellu also highlighted the hospital’s growing reputation, noting that its enhanced capacity has attracted international partnerships. He announced that the Surgeons in Action Foundation from Spain will soon visit the hospital to provide free surgical services, offering students the opportunity to gain experience alongside international medical experts.
The IGP further revealed that some interns may be recruited into the SLP in the future to strengthen the police service’s expanding medical operations nationwide. He underlined the broader vision of the SLP to establish health centres across Sierra Leone, aligning with President Brigadier Rtd. Dr. Julius Maada Bio’s commitment to advancing the nation’s healthcare sector.
Concluding his remarks, IGP Sellu reflected on the historic nature of the occasion, noting that in over thirty years of the hospital’s operations, this is the first time such a large-scale internship programme has been organized.
