Director of Crime Service at the Sierra Leone Police, Commissioner Ibrahim Lahai said police have intensified the fight against drugs, specifically ‘Kush’ in the country, noting lots of young people are losing their lives due to the consumption of the illegal substance.
Commissioner Ibrahim was speaking at a police press briefing at their headquarters in Freetown on Wednesday, March 20th, 2024. He called on everyone to join the fight against Kush, saying the police alone cannot do it.
“We are paid to ensure that we do the right thing” he said, stressing that one of their functions is to ensure that they deal with crime and charge to court. He said, as a force, they are trying their best to halt the Kush menace.
In another development, the director of crime service also reiterated that they are still investigating the November 26 failed coup last year and other crimes that had happened in the country, saying of recent, the police arrested a coup suspect in Makeni, someone he said that played a key role in the incident, adding others are still on the run and that police are still looking for them while encouraging the public to assist with relevant information.
In another update, the police commissioner disclosed that police recently raided fourteen drug dealers in Grafton; adding that several drug related arrests have been made in Waterloo and other places in Freetown and that the matters are now in court.
In kenema, according to Sub-inspector Brima James Kamara, sixteen people were arrested with Kush and other related drugs and that they are helping police with the investigations while others are being prosecuted in court.
