Police have apprehended one Abdul Kassim Turay who is alleged to have poured acid on Ibrahim Conteh. Turay is currently in custody at the Mile 91 Police Division where further investigations are being conducted to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Turay was reportedly arrested following a tip-off to News Journal Media which reported that he was attempting to flee to Lungi by ferry. Acting swiftly, police officers at the Freetown ferry station detained Turay on Wednesday, September 11, 2024. He was subsequently transferred to the Mile 91 Police Division, the jurisdiction where the alleged acid attack took place.
Officer Mbawui from the PWD Police Station in Freetown escorted Turay back to Mile 91, ensuring he was handed over to authorities for investigation.
“Suspect Abdul Kassim Turay is now under our police custody,” confirmed Alhassan Bangura, the Information Officer at the Mile 91 Police Division.
The incident has drawn attention as acid attack remains a serious criminal offense, often causing severe physical and emotional trauma to victims. Authorities are expected to provide further updates as the investigation progresses.
