In a compassionate act of solidarity, brothers Chernor Sulaiman Bah and Mohamed Kargbo, both with deep ties to Sierra Leone’s Parliament, donated bundles of sachet water to inmates at the Makeni Correctional Service facility. The donation, made during a recent oversight visit by the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights, underscores the brothers’ commitment to human dignity and the welfare of those in correctional centers.

Chernor Sulaiman Bah, a current parliamentary staff member and Clerk to the Human Rights Committee (2015–2018 and January 2025 present), and Mohamed Kargbo, a former staff member who served the same committee from 2018 to 2021, drew on their extensive experience to address critical needs, our time with the Human Rights Committee exposed us to the challenging conditions in correctional facilities, said Bah. This modest donation reflects our dedication to supporting inmates’ rights and dignity.

The donation was warmly received by Chief Superintendent Kelly, who expressed profound gratitude on behalf of the Makeni Correctional Center. This generous act will significantly benefit our inmates, he said, offering prayers for the donors and urging others to follow their example. The gesture aligns with ongoing efforts to improve conditions in Sierra Leone’s correctional facilities,

Members of the Human Rights Committee, present during the presentation, commended the brothers’ initiative as a powerful show of support for their oversight mission, the committee is intensifying its efforts to ensure correctional facilities meet human rights standards, addressing concerns like overcrowding and inadequate resources that exacerbate inmate hardships.

The brothers emphasized the broader message of their contribution, while small, this donation highlights the shared responsibility of society to uphold human rights for all, including those in custody, their act serves as a call to action for individuals and organizations to support vulnerable populations, reinforcing the committee’s advocacy for systemic reform.
