During the second edition of the Spelling Bee and Quranic event organized by Mama-Wurie Islamic School, Princess Reneta, a pupil, argued that parental support plays an important role in children’s education.
While delivering the welcome remarks, Reneta said education fosters nation building and to fill the gap of socioeconomic challenges, noting parents are the first teachers who should serve as agents of change in society.
“By investing in our education, you’re not just securing a brighter future for your children; you’re also uplifting the socio-economic landscape of our nation,” she said, adding education is the cornerstone of development, and it’s through the collective efforts of parents, educators, and policymakers that the potentials of young people can be unlocked.
“Despite the progress we’ve made in education, there are still gaps in our abilities as youths to contribute effectively to nation-building” Student Reneta asserted, noting it’s crucial to address these challenges directly by equipping them with the skills and knowledge that is needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
She called on parents to increase their commitment to providing them with the necessary tools their children need to succeed while acknowledging the importance of opportunity to pursue their dreams and contribute meaningfully to the progress of Sierra Leone.
In his statement, the principal of the school, Mohamed Barrie welcomed all and sundry to the second edition of the Spelling Bee and Arabic competition organized by his school.
He encouraged parents, students, school administrators and community members to reflect on the invaluable role that extracurricular activities play in shaping the holistic development of the pupils, noting activities integral to their learning curriculum not only cultivate talents but also instil crucial life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and perseverance.
Mr. Barrie urged parents to consider extending their support to the school’s extracurricular programs. “Your financial contributions can make a significant difference in enriching these activities, providing our students with even more opportunities to explore their passions and unlock their full potential” he appealed.
“Together, let’s invest in the next generation, empowering them to excel not only academically but also in all aspects of their lives. Your generosity will pave the way for brighter futures and lasting impact,” the principal concluded.
Also speaking was the Director of the school, Dr. Ramadan Jalloh, who said almost all of the aims and objectives of Ma’am Wurie School have been achieved and appreciated all contributors, noting this year’s event they decided to include the Arabic/Islamic component because the school was established on the basis of combining English and Arabic education.
Mama Wurie Islamic Primary and Secondary School was established in 2020 and is located at Coker Drive, Regent Road, Freetown, and it offers both English and Arabic/Islamic knowledge from nursery to secondary level. This year’s competition targeted all levels.
