In a major push to bolster national security ahead of the 2028 presidential elections, more than 5,000 aspiring recruits across Sierra Leone on Saturday participated in the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) nationwide entrance examinations.
The exams, held simultaneously in all five regions Western Area, Northern, Southern, Eastern, and North-Western attracted thousands of young men and women determined to serve their country as part of the police force.
Designated examination centers were set up in each region to facilitate the process, which police officials described as smooth, transparent, and well-coordinated.
According to SLP authorities, the goal is to recruit 3,000 new officers from this latest batch of applicants, the recruitment is part of a broader effort to enhance police visibility, improve public safety, and increase the force’s capacity in preparation for upcoming national events, including the 2028 elections.
This recruitment drive is essential for strengthening law enforcement, especially as we prepare for future national responsibilities, said a senior SLP official, we are committed to a fair and merit-based process that brings in the best candidates.
The examination phase marks the first step in a multi-stage selection process, which will include physical fitness assessments, background checks, medical evaluations, and interviews.
Many of the candidates expressed enthusiasm and optimism about joining the force, citing a desire to serve the nation and contribute to peace and security.
Becoming a police officer has always been my dream, said Mariatu Kamara, one of the applicants in Makeni. I want to help protect my community and make a difference.
The SLP continues to emphasize professionalism, discipline, and community engagement as key pillars of its mission, this latest recruitment is seen as a critical step toward building a stronger, more inclusive police force.
Results of the entrance exams are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
