Hon. Papa Bangura of the opposition All People’s Congress (APC) party from Bombali has urged the new Director General of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Cooperation (SLBC), Madam Josephine Fatima Kamara, to depoliticize the national broadcaster, give it a facelift and improve workers’ condition of service.
The lawmaker was speaking recently at the approval hearing of the new SLBC DG in Parliament.
He said Madam Kamara is appointed not to serve the people of any district, but rather to serve the people of Sierra Leone through the national broadcaster, noting she should not listen to any politician or political party while exercising her directly general’s duty at the SLBC.
Hon. Papa Bangura rebutted some member of Parliament who claimed ownership of Mrs. Kamara coming from Pujehun and Kono districts, noting it doesn’t matter where she comes from but what she can do for the people of Sierra Leone, encouraging the SLBC DG to treat all workers equally including to those working at regional level.
Speaking as a journalist and someone who has worked for SLBC in the northern part of the country, Hon. Bangura recounted his experience working with some staff from that part of the country and their current status despite working there for more than a decade. He therefore requested DG Kamara to increase the salary of workers.
Moreover, he asked Madam Kamara to renovate the institution’s facilities in Makeni which he said is at a ‘depreciation level’.
