Sierra Leone’s National Youth Service (NYS) held a remarkable passing-out ceremony for Batch 7 on February 17, 2025, marking the successful completion of their service year. The event took place in Freetown and was attended by top government officials, dignitaries, and stakeholders in the education and youth development sectors.
Present at the ceremony were the Minister of Youth Affairs, Mohamed Orman Bangura, his Deputy, the Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Dr. Ramatulai Wurie, and the Executive Director of NYS, Mohamed Onanah Jalloh. Other key personalities, including representatives from partner organizations, also graced the occasion.
Also, Representative from UNDP and other key personalities including the Commandant of POTA Conel Keita and other military personnel are all present.
The Executive director of NYS Mr. Mohamed Onanah Jalloh also shed light on the important of this programme. He stated by given accolade to His Excellency president Dr. Julius Maada Bio for his tireless effort to help young potential students to achieve their dreams. That which he promised in his manifesto Speech. Human Capital Development.
Mr Jalloh also assured parents and students that next year’s programme will include both graduates and undergrad students who are unable to enter University due to financial issues. “As government we are committed to given back the people of Sierra Leone, Mr Jalloh stated.
During the ceremony, the dignitaries delivered inspiring speeches, commending the graduates for their dedication, resilience, and commitment throughout their service year. They emphasized the crucial role young people play in nation-building and encouraged the graduates to use the skills and experience gained to contribute meaningfully to Sierra Leone’s development.
Minister Bangura praised the NYS program for equipping young graduates with practical experience and fostering a sense of patriotism. He reiterated the government’s commitment to youth empowerment through initiatives such as the Youth Employment Scheme (YES!), aligning with President Julius Maada Bio’s “Big Five Game Changers” agenda.
Dr. Ramatulai Wurie, Minister of Technical and Higher Education, highlighted the importance of continuous learning and urged the graduates to seize opportunities for further personal and professional growth. She emphasized that the NYS experience was a stepping stone to greater career prospects.
The event also featured an awards presentation, recognizing outstanding participants for their exceptional contributions during their service year. Several graduates received accolades for leadership, community service, and excellence in their respective placements.
The ceremony concluded with a refreshment session, allowing guests, officials, and graduates to interact and celebrate their achievements. The atmosphere was filled with joy and pride as the graduates prepared to embark on the next phase of their careers.
The NYS program, established in 2018, has been instrumental in bridging the gap between academic learning and practical workforce experience. Over the years, it has played a pivotal role in shaping young Sierra Leonean professionals, preparing them for the challenges and opportunities of the job market.
With Batch 7 now officially passing out, the NYS remains committed to nurturing the next generation of skilled and responsible citizens, ensuring they contribute positively to Sierra Leone’s progress.
