In a recent interview with Mr. Mohamed L. Bah, Director of Communications at the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), shed light on the agency’s ongoing efforts and challenges in responding to disasters across the country.

The central government has been working to keep the agency functional and effective in emergency response, but we still face challenges from funding and equipment shortages to gaps in rescue planning, Bah explained, that’s why we partner with other agencies to better manage disasters nationwide.”

Bah’s comments follow a recent spike in fire incidents across Sierra Leone. According to NDMA reports, 38 fire outbreaks occurred in the past two months alone, with 70% linked to electrical faults, these alarming figures underscore the urgent need for improved resources and robust response systems.

To strengthen its disaster response capacity, the NDMA has been collaborating with key partners, including the Sierra Leone Red Cross Society and various local councils, these partnerships are aimed at enhancing preparedness, addressing logistical and funding constraints, and promoting a coordinated approach to disaster management.

Despite these collaborations, significant challenges persist. Bah reiterated the agency’s call for increased investment in disaster risk reduction and emergency response infrastructure. He also stressed the role of community participation and public education in preventing disasters and building resilience.

As a country facing both natural and man-made hazards, we must prioritize disaster preparedness at every level, Bah noted, our collective safety depends on collaboration between the government, NGOs, and the public.

The NDMA remains committed to improving its capabilities and calls on all stakeholders to support its mission of building a safer and more resilient Sierra Leone.
