MP Raises concerns on water

Hon. Alice Kumabeh

Hon. Alice Kumabeh representing the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) in Parliament, has during the recent 53rd sitting of the Sixth Parliament of the second Republic at the Parliament Building on Tower Hill in Freetown, expressed grave concerns about what she considered as alarming water pollution of the Taia River in Bonthe District.

According to the lawmaker, during the Fifth Parliament she moved a motion to address the said pollution allegedly caused by illicit miners, stressing that to her dismay nothing was done after the Committee presented its recommendations.

She however noted that the then Speaker of Parliament made tremendous efforts and instituted a Committee that carried out the investigation. The Committee, she went on, deed a good job as it engaged the chiefs in that area in order to find out possible causes and remedies.

Hon. Alice Kumabeh furthered that the pollution, according to their findings, was caused by the use of heavy-duty machines and other chemicals, stressing that the issue must be treated with utmost seriousness. She therefore called on the Speaker of Parliament to summon both the Ministers of Environment and that of Mines and Mineral Resources in order to salvage the situation.
