In a televised address to the nation on the evening hours of Sunday, November 26th, 2023, President Julius Maada Bio confirmed arrests of those with the greatest responsibility for recent disturbing security breaches in which, according to the President, “Some unidentified individuals attempted to break into the military armoury at Wilberforce Barracks” in Freetown, causing heavy gunfire and panic.

“… Calm has been restored. Most of the leaders have been arrested. Security operations and investigations are ongoing. We will ensure that those responsible are held accountable through due process,” the President said.

President Bio recognized the role of security forces and citizens throughout the frightening saga, while advising people to be vigilant and compliant with security directives.

“I acknowledge the bravery and dedication of our armed forces, police and all those who played a role in defeating this attempt to undermine the peace and stability we have worked so hard to achieve. Their commitment to the defence of our democracy deserves our deepest gratitude. I thank all citizens for complying with the security measures and advised everyone to remain vigilant and to corporate with the security forces,” he said.

The President reminded everyone of the importance of peace and national unity and how such are crucial in overcoming challenges.

“Fellow Sierra Leoneans, in times like this; we are reminded of the importance of national unity. Let us not succumb to fear or division. Let us come together as one people, one nation. Our strength lies in our unity, and it is through solidarity that we can overcome challenges that come our way,” he expressed.

He called on political leaders, traditional leaders, civil society and citizens to continue working to preserve the peace of the nation.

As provided for by the laws of the country, the President is the Commander-in-Chief of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces who shoulders the security or orderliness of the nation.

Speaking in that capacity, in his address to the nation, President Bio guaranteed that; “As your commander-in-chief, I want to assure everybody who is resident in Sierra Leone that we have overcome this challenge, and together, we will continue on the path of progress and development”.

The Sierra Leone Police also confirmed, in a public notice dated 27thNovember, 2033, that the same group of “unidentified persons” attacked and broke open Pademba Road and Special Court Correctional Centres, Kissy and Calaba Town Police Stations, causing several prisoners and suspects to escape.
