In an effort to foster capacity building in terms of roads and responsibilities of Councilors, the Minister of Local Government and Community Affairs and the Decentralization Secretariat have conducted an orientation for Councilors at Ward C in Waterloo, 17th May 2024.

The orientation session gave Councilors a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities as they have been entrusted the role of mobilization and protecting of people in their communities.

Tamba Lamina Minister of Local Government and Community Affairs, said before now everything was centralized in terms of government, but now local people are now recognized in decision making. “Initially there are nineteen Councils and now they have twenty-two Councils and all of them have representative of those Councils, so in a nutshell as a Councilor you have big responsibilities to ensure that you provide leaders for those localities and governance level.”

Rowland Cole Chairman Western Area Rural District Council, underscored the importance of playing and oversight role such an orientation and crucially in enabling Councilors to make a informed decision within his/her localities.

Salliue Kamara Assistant Director Physical Desensitization Ministry of Finance, admonished Councilors to exhibit what they have learnt during the orientation, and to build the capabilities of Councilors through this initiative is essential for promoting good governance and efficient service delivery at the local level he said.
