In a significant move to strengthen the operational capacity of the Sierra Leone police, on 24 June 2025 the minister of internal affairs, Rtd. AIG Morie Lengor Esq, has officially commissioned 30 brand new, custom-designed motorbikes to enhance traffic management and law enforcement, particularly within Freetown and other key locations across the country.
While commissioning the motorbikes, Minister Lengor emphasized that the initiative is part of the government’s ongoing commitment to modernizing the police force and improving its ability to protect lives and property, he noted that this effort aligns with the broader strategy of transforming the Sierra Leone Police from a traditional force into a more people-centered police service.
These motorbikes will be deployed primarily for traffic enforcement and rapid response to emergency calls, the minister stated, they will help address issues of lawlessness and indiscipline, while ensuring a faster and more visible police presence in our communities.”
He also announced the introduction of a new toll-free emergency number 900 accessible across all mobile networks, making it easier for citizens to reach the police in times of distress. minister Lengor used the occasion to call on officers to maintain integrity and shun corruption in their work, he further urged them to intensify the fight against crime, drug trafficking, and public disorder to help ensure national security.
On behalf of his excellency president Brig. Rtd. Julius Maada Bio, the minister applauded the inspector general of Police (IGP) and his team for their continued efforts to maintain order in the capital and their prudent management of government funds, which enabled the procurement of the motorbikes, he also revealed that the minister of finance has pledged ongoing financial support for police operations, despite the current economic challenges.
In his remarks, inspector general of police William Fayia Sellu reiterated that the new motorbikes will significantly boost the police’s capacity to respond to emergencies, enforce traffic regulations, and reduce lawlessness, especially in urban centers like Freetown, he commended the minister of internal affairs for his unwavering support and leadership in enhancing the effectiveness of the Sierra Leone Police.
He concluded by assuring the public that the motorbikes will be used strictly for their intended purposes to serve and protect.
