Amid laughter, chants, and waves of applause, the Milton Margai School for the Blind, in partnership with the Caring Hands Foundation, held its much-anticipated Annual Sports Day on Friday, May 23rd, at the Murray Town Field in Freetown. More than a celebration of athleticism, the vibrant event was a resounding affirmation that disability is not inability.

The school, a longstanding symbol of empowerment for visually impaired children, transformed the usually quiet field into a lively arena of hope, strength, and unity. Pupils, parents, staff, and supporters gathered to cheer on participants, creating an atmosphere bursting with energy and inclusion.

Two spirited teams Blue House and Yellow House competed in a series of exciting races and games. From sprints and relays to wheelchair races and fun events, the day encouraged not only healthy competition but also teamwork and a deep sense of community.

The purpose of this day goes beyond winning medals, said Salieu Turay, Headmaster of Milton Margai School for the Blind, it’s about visibility, dignity, and empowerment. Every race they run is a step forward in breaking down social barriers, the event opened with a colourful parade, as pupils proudly marched in their house uniforms. The cheers of proud parents filled the air, many moved to tears as they watched their children run with confidence and joy.

Seeing my son participate in the 100-meter dash fills me with pride, said Zainab Koroma, a parent, these children deserve every opportunity to shine. Today, they proved that they are capable of anything.

Yellow House emerged as the overall champion, lifting the trophy after winning the majority of the contests. Yet, victory belonged to every child who participated. The sportsmanship, courage, and resilience displayed throughout the day were unforgettable.

Whether they won or not, every child here is a champion, said Jainny Tejan Kella, CEO of the Caring Hands Foundation, their determination is inspiring, we will continue to support this school and advocate for greater inclusion, she urged other NGOs, companies, and government bodies to invest more in schools serving children with disabilities, with the right support, these children can go far, let’s give them the tools they need to thrive.

A poignant moment came when a visually impaired student confidently addressed the audience, explaining the purpose of the event, we may not see with our eyes, he said, but we see with our hearts. Today, we showed the world what we can do, long-time teacher Isatu Turay, who has served at the school for over a decade, shared her pride, each year, this event reminds us why inclusive education matters. It builds confidence, belonging, and joy in our pupils, watching them grow stronger is truly heartwarming.”

Among the guests was Abdul Bangura, a representative from the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, who praised the school’s commitment to inclusive education, Milton Margai School for the Blind continues to set the standard in special needs education. The government remains committed to supporting institutions like this.”

In his closing remarks, Headmaster Turay extended heartfelt thanks to all partners, especially the Caring Hands Foundation, and teased grand plans for next year’s event as the school prepares to celebrate its 70th anniversary, Next year will be a national celebration of ability, strength, and unity, he said, our children deserve nothing but the best.

The day ended in high spirits with dancing, photo sessions, and the joyful clinking of medals, as the sun set over Murray Town Field, children’s voices singing victory songs echoed a message of hope: though some live without sight, their spirits shine with an unshakable brilliance, this was more than just a school event it was a celebration of resilience, inclusion, and the transformative power of opportunity.
