massive seaweed invasion disrupts

By Aminata Abu Bakarr Kamara

Residents of Lungi, particularly those living near the beaches, are raising growing concerns as massive quantities of seaweed continue to wash ashore, disrupting daily life and sending a foul odor throughout the area. What was once a peaceful coastal environment has become a source of discomfort for both beachgoers and residents in the surrounding communities.

The seaweed invasion, which has been increasing in volume, not only disturbs the aesthetic beauty of Lungi’s beaches but also creates significant health concerns for residents. Mohamed Sankoh, a resident at Banda Wharf, expressed his frustration: “The smell is unbearable. We can’t enjoy our homes anymore because the stench from the seaweed fills the air day and night.”

Local businesses, including hotels and small eateries near the coastline, have also been affected by the seaweed buildup, with reports of reduced foot traffic from both tourists and locals. “It’s not only disturbing for those of us who live near the beach, but it’s also driving away customers,” said Sheka Bangura of Tintafor. “People don’t want to come near the beach because of the smell and the unsightly appearance of the seaweed.”

Fishermen in the area, who depend on the beaches for access to the sea, are also struggling to navigate through the thick layers of seaweed. Foday, a resident of Lungi Modia, shared his concerns: “The seaweed is making it hard for us to go out fishing. It’s piling up everywhere, and it’s not just an inconvenience—it’s affecting our livelihood.”

Mohamed Sesay, another resident living near Mahera Wharf, also voiced his frustration: “We’re tired of this grass as residents who stay closer to the wharf. We’re no longer enjoying a friendly atmosphere because the smell and sight of the seaweed are overwhelming.”

As the problem grows, residents are calling on the local authorities and environmental agencies to intervene. They urge them to address the seaweed crisis before it worsens, fearing the potential long-term effects on the health and economy of Lungi.

For now, the residents of Lungi can only hope for a swift solution to this environmental issue that threatens to disrupt their way of life.
