The Lungi Police Division has uncovered a significant consignment of suspected narcotic drugs at the Freetown International Airport (FIA) Cargo Terminal following an intelligence tip-off received on Thursday, 27th November 2025, between 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. The shipment, believed to have been illegally imported by unknown individuals, is suspected to be part of ongoing efforts to undermine the country’s fight against drug trafficking.
Acting on the intelligence, a team of police officers led by the Local Unit Commander (LUC), CSP Mohamed Kugba Allieu, immediately responded to the scene. The LUC swiftly informed the Anvil Division (New Airport Police Division) Commander, CSP Cecilia Akiebo Cole, as well as the Northwest Region Police Commander, AIG Joseph Ibrahim Lahai. Both senior officers were present during the operation, which led to the discovery of 152 cartons of Tramadol (250 mg).
The operation was carried out in collaboration with several partner institutions, including representatives from the National Revenue Authority (NRA), the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Office of National Security (ONS), and the Pharmacy Board. The seized items were documented and treated as exhibits for a thorough police investigation.
The consignment has since been securely transported under armed escort to the Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU) Headquarters in Hastings, Freetown, for further investigation. According to the police, the consignees have not yet shown up to claim the shipment.
Meanwhile, the Cargo Manager at FIA Lungi is currently assisting investigators, as he is the custodian of the Air Waybill documents associated with the intercepted consignment.
Police report that both the Ranger and Anvil Divisions remain peaceful and stable at the time of reporting.
