Minister of Local Government and Community Affairs, Tamba Lamina
The Minister of Local Government and Community Affairs, Tamba Lamina, has unveiled government plans to introduce redistricting and sweeping local government reforms.
Speaking at the government’s weekly press briefing on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, the Minister described the reforms, anchored in the revised Local Government Act of 2022, as a critical step toward strengthening governance and driving national development.
Minister Lamina noted that while the Constitution empowers the President to establish new localities and councils, President Julius Maada Bio has insisted on broad stakeholder engagement to ensure the redistricting process is transparent, inclusive, and nationally owned.
The reforms, he said, are designed to promote equitable resource distribution, improve service delivery, and enhance local revenue mobilization.
As part of the initiative, two new districts Kpanguma and Bandajuma will be established. Freetown will also gain two additional administrative councils, while the Western Rural Area will benefit from three new governance measures aimed at strengthening accountability and accelerating development.
Observers say the redistricting is expected to bring government closer to the people and improve administrative efficiency across the country.
