By Emma Black

In a major push to modernize the country’s land administration systems, the ministry of lands, housing and country planning has launched a comprehensive capacity-building program aimed at equipping government surveyors and technical staff with cutting-edge geospatial tools and techniques.

The training, which commenced last week in Freetown, focuses on the use of continuous operating reference Stations and state-of-the-art surveying equipment. It forms a key component of the Sierra Leone land administration Project, a national initiative designed to digitize and professionalize land governance for greater transparency, accuracy, and efficiency.

The CORS Network, a high-precision satellite-based positioning system, lies at the core of the training, it allows for faster and more accurate surveying a critical step in improving land registration, infrastructure development, and boundary demarcation, the technology enables surveyors to meet both local and international standards in land management.

Speaking at the opening session, Mr. Tamba Dauda, professional head and director of Surveys and Lands, described the training as a “milestone moment” for the sector, he stressed the ministry’s dedication to building a technically skilled workforce capable of advancing land governance reform through modern practices and global best standards.

The training features a combination of classroom instruction, practical demonstrations, and hands on fieldwork, ensuring that participants not only understand the theoretical foundations of the tools but also gain real world experience, the sessions are being led by a blend of local, industry officials and international geospatial consultants, ensuring a robust and diverse learning environment.

This effort underscores the ministry’s broader commitment to enhancing service delivery and improving the overall efficiency of land administration in Sierra Leone, it also reflects the government’s vision for a modernized, transparent, and reliable land sector.

Special recognition goes to minister Dr. Turad Senesie, deputy minister madam Phyllis Kormoh, and director Tamba Dauda for their leadership in driving innovation and professional development within the ministry.
