Members of Parliament through the Parliamentary Committee on Youths Affairs has, on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, during an oversight engagement discovered illegal substance believed to be Kush at the Shelmingo Car Wash in Bo, South of the country.

Clerk of the Committee, Madam Hannah J. Massaquoi, during the oversight inspection at the car wash confiscated 19 wraps of Kush.

Briefing Committee Members, Madam Massaquoi said upon their arrival, she decided to move around the car wash centre and that during that movement she met a lady sleeping while a guy was seated next to her. She therefore ordered the guy to handover the substance he had, which he did, but together with some users, ran away. However, some users were nabbed and the MPs handed them and the suspected drugs to the police in that part of the country.

Handling over the Kush to the Chief Clerk at the Eastern Police in Bo, Police Constable 19120, Alfred Cho Barley, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Youths Affairs, Hon. Abdul Latif Sesay said as part of the countless efforts in combating substance abuse and drugs consumption nationwide, the Committee was handing over the said substance and users for a thorough investigation and that the Committee will be expecting a report.

On her part, Member of the Committee, Hon. Sia Mahawa Habiama Tommy urged the police to deal with the issue professionally, stressing that the Committee will continue to do a follow-up on the issue.

The rationale for the establishment of car wash centers around the country was aimed at providing job opportunities for young people, particularly those who may face challenges in finding other decent employment. The notion is that the car wash can help remove youths from the street and not only help them with their livelihood but also develop valuable skills in customer service, teamwork and time management.
