Police at Kissy Police Division apprehended two suspects, 23-year-old Mohamed Jalloh of Magnus Street, Wellington, and 24-year-old Mohamed Kamara of Long Bench, Calaba Town, on Tuesday, 28th January, 2025, for allegedly attempting to steal transformer cables belonging to the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA).
The incident, which occurred near the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) warehouse at the Wellington Industrial Estate, resulted in a massive explosion that led to power outages in the area.
According to the Kissy Police Division, led by Local Unit Commander (LUC) Bob Musa Mansaray, officers responded swiftly to the scene, preventing further damage and securing the suspects from an enraged crowd that had gathered, seemingly intent on administering mob justice.
In a statement, LUC Mansaray reaffirmed the division’s commitment to safeguarding government infrastructure and ensuring that those involved in the destruction of public assets face justice. He also urged the public to remain vigilant and collaborate with law enforcement to prevent such incidents in the future.
The arrest highlights the ongoing challenge of transformer theft in Sierra Leone, a crime that not only endangers lives but also disrupts essential services. Authorities continue to encourage community participation in safeguarding public resources, emphasizing that collective security is key to maintaining stability.
