In a decisive show of commitment to combating drug-related offenses within Kambia township and its border communities, on 23 October 2025, the Kambia police division, under the command of CSP Sao Vandy, has carried out a symbolic burning of a large quantity of dried green leaves suspected to be cannabis Sativa.
The exercise, conducted in collaboration with the office of National security (ONS) district coordinator, Mr. Sysveter Kpukumu, and officials from the Kambia district magistrate’s court, took place on Thursday, 23rd October 2025, at exactly 11:50 a.m. in front of the Kambia district magistrate’s court.
The event was witnessed by key district stakeholders, including journalists, transport operators, civil society representatives, and other community partners.
Participants commended magistrate Joseph Toby and the joint security forces for their unwavering efforts in the ongoing fight against harmful substances, particularly kush, tramadol, and cannabis. They also pledged their continued support through cooperation, coordination, and information-sharing with law enforcement agencies to help identify and report any suspicious drug-related activities.
Speaking during an exclusive interview, magistrate Joseph Toby described the burning exercise as a crucial milestone in the judiciary’s ongoing campaign against drug trafficking and abuse, he reiterated the judiciary’s zero-tolerance stance on drug offenses and encouraged community members to actively assist law enforcement by providing credible information that could lead to the arrest of offenders.
This exercise symbolizes our collective resolve to uphold the law and protect the wellbeing of our people, magistrate Toby said, all legal proceedings relating to drug offenses are being handled professionally and without undue delay.
The symbolic burning serves as a powerful reminder of the government’s determination through its security and judicial institutions to maintain a drug-free environment, especially around Kambia’s border crossing points, which have become strategic areas in the fight against the trafficking and abuse of illicit substances.
