In the midst of Sierra Leone’s escalating narcotics crisis and the widespread devastation caused by the Kush epidemic, Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara (JFK) has issued a powerful call for greater police accountability and adherence to the rule of law.

In a recent social media post, the former Attorney General and minister of justice underscored that the Sierra Leone police have a positive operational duty to conduct effective investigations into drug trafficking and narcotics-related offences committed by private individuals.

According to JFK, this duty is not discretionary it is a legal obligation, he cautioned that any failure by law enforcement agencies to carry out thorough and impartial investigations amounts to a breach of responsibility, thereby giving victims the right to pursue legal redress.

JFK’s statement strikes at the core of public trust in law enforcement, he emphasized that when the police fulfill their legal mandate with diligence and integrity, justice prevails and citizens’ confidence in the system is strengthened. Conversely, when investigations are neglected or mishandled, public faith in justice erodes, and impunity takes root.

Beyond being a commentary, JFK’s intervention serves as a strategic and timely reminder of the state’s obligation to uphold institutional accountability. As the country struggles with one of its most pressing social challenges of the proliferation of drugs and substance abuse his message reinforces that the fight against narcotics extends far beyond arrests and seizures.

It is, at its core, about the integrity of investigations, the competence of enforcement institutions, and the unwavering commitment to justice. JFK’s words echo a national demand for stronger oversight, lawful policing, and a justice system that truly serves the people.
