Increased Police

By Thaimu T kamara

The Sierra Leone Police have intensified their operations along the Freetown highway, introducing more check -points and increasing scrutiny on both drivers and passengers. More especially from kambia to Freetown. This heightened activity is part of a broader effort to enhance road safety, combat crime, and ensure compliance with traffic laws.
Commuters and drivers have expressed mixed reactions to these measures. While some applaud the police for prioritizing security, others have raised concerns about delays and alleged harassment.
“I understand the need for security, but the number of checkpoints is excessive,” said Mohamed Sorie Kamara, a frequent traveller on the highway. “It’s causing unnecessary delays, and the treatment from some officers can be frustrating.”
Drivers have also highlighted the financial burden they face due to frequent fines or demands for bribes. “It’s not just about safety; it feels like an excuse to extort money from us,” claimed a commercial driver, who preferred to remain anonymous.
A Sierra Leone Police officer, however, defended their actions, stating that the increased presence is necessary to deter criminal activities, such as illegal transportation of goods, and to reduce road accidents. “Our primary goal is to protect lives and property,” a police spokesperson said. “We urge the public to cooperate with us as we strive to ensure everyone’s safety.”
As the situation develops, calls are growing for a more balanced approach—one that ensures safety without causing undue hardship for road users. Local civil society groups are urging the police to improve their engagement with the public and to address allegations of corruption among officers.
Mile 38 check points. One check point before the main one remains. Freetown a vital corridor for Sierra Leone’s economy and daily activities. How authorities manage this increased enforcement will likely shape public sentiment in the coming weeks.
