The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has agreed to provide technical support to Sierra Leone, following a series of high-level engagements at the 34th Session of the IMO Assembly in London, United Kingdom.
The Senior Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Transport, serving as the Alternate Head of Sierra Leone’s delegation, joined the country’s representatives to pursue bilateral meetings with IMO officials and member states. He conveyed the encouraging news of IMO’s commitment, describing it as a major step forward for Sierra Leone’s maritime sector.
According to the Senior Permanent Secretary, Edward Kwame Yankson, the assurance of technical support came as a direct result of the impactful presentation delivered by Ambassador Alhaji Fanday Turay, Minister of Transport and Aviation, during the opening session of the General Assembly. The Minister’s personal engagement with the IMO Secretary-General further strengthened Sierra Leone’s case for enhanced maritime cooperation.
The forthcoming support is expected to bolster Sierra Leone’s maritime administration, improve compliance with international standards, and advance the nation’s broader transport and aviation reform agenda.
