IGP Sellu Breaks Ground for Police Hospital Morgue, Commissions Eye Clinic

By Aminata Abu Bakarr Kamara

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. William Fayia Sellu, on Thursday, 14 August 2025, spearheaded a landmark development initiative at the Kingtom Police Hospital, which included the groundbreaking of a new morgue, the commissioning of an eye clinic, and the announcement of a free surgical campaign scheduled for next month.

The event, held on the hospital grounds, was attended by senior police officers, medical staff, and invited guests. Deputy Director and Medical Superintendent, ASP Dr. John Mumuneh Konteh, outlined the three key purposes of the ceremony: the sod-turning for the morgue, the opening of the eye clinic, and the arrival of a Spanish medical team on 19 September 2025 to conduct free surgeries.

Dr. Konteh lauded the IGP’s commitment to modernizing the facility, noting the significant improvements achieved since Mr. Sellu assumed office.

In his keynote address, IGP Sellu reflected on the hospital’s dilapidated state prior to his tenure, stating that one of his earliest directives was to transform the institution.

Today, the hospital has evolved into a teaching hospital, he said, we no longer serve only police personnel and their families the wider community is also benefiting from our services.”

He credited the Spanish medical team for establishing a state-of-the-art operating theatre, enabling most laboratory tests to be conducted in-house. Plans are also underway to acquire X-ray and scanning equipment to enhance the hospital’s self-sufficiency.

Looking ahead, the IGP announced his ambition to establish a nursing school at the hospital, describing it as a natural progression given the growing expertise of the staff. He also celebrated the acquisition of a mortuary refrigerator, which will support the soon-to-be-constructed morgue, a long-held goal of his leadership.

Senior medical professionals now regard this hospital as a top-tier facility, Mr. Sellu remarked, urging staff to maintain unity and professionalism.

Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Simeon Owiz Koroma, also praised the IGP’s leadership, calling him a gem and encouraging officers to support his vision for the force’s healthcare services.

The ceremony concluded with the symbolic sod-turning for the morgue and the unveiling of the mortuary refrigerator, marking another milestone in the hospital’s ongoing transformation.
