The Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone on 6th and 7th of November, 2024 conducted a training for 35 participants including members of District Human Rights Committees (DHRCs) and other Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in the North West region on the Importance of Human Rights Indicators for Effective Monitoring & Reporting on Treaty Bodies and Special Mechanisms.
This followed similar trainings in Makeni and Waterloo for the North and Western Area respectively.
With support from UNDP and Irish Aid, the training at the NDMA Hall in Port Loko was geared towards enhancing the knowledge of DHRCs and CSOs in monitoring and reporting effectively on recommendations of Treaty Bodies and Special Mechanisms.
Participants expressed readiness to serve as change agents within their respective organisations and communities, by not only monitoring but also reporting on Treaty Bodies and Special Mechanisms’ recommendations, using the human rights indicators.
A civil society activist, Papa Bangura considered the training as important as it enriched their capacity in monitoring and reporting, especially from a human rights lens.
“This training will serve as an eye-opener in monitoring human rights issues,” he said and thanked Commission for strengthening their Human Rights Capacity in a bid to comply with international Human Rights Monitoring and Reporting standards.
Commissioner Hassan Samba Yarjah thanked the UNDP and Irish Aid for always supporting the work of the Commission in protecting and promoting the rights of all in the country.
He recognised the work of DHRCs and CSOs and added “It is not a mistake that we decided to train you on this very important topic. It is part of our functions to always collaborate with you.”
