
High Court Judge, Honourable Justice Cosmotina Jarrett (J.), has sentenced Edward Bangura to fifteen (15) years’ imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to the offence of illegal possession of a prohibited drug, Kush.
Edward Bangura was charged under section 8(a) of the National Drugs Control Act 2008 for possession of 50 grams of Kush, a controlled narcotic, without lawful authority. Court records show that on 12th May 2025, Bangura was found in possession of the drug in Freetown.
The convict was apprehended by officers from Lumley police station during a routine patrol along Kallon Drive off Regent Road, Lumley, according to prosecuting counsel, E.A. Deen Esq., Bangura was discovered asleep in an unregistered vehicle, upon searching him, police found eighty-nine (89) wraps of substance weighing 50 grams, which was chemically tested and confirmed to be Kush, the convict admitted ownership of the drug.
Edward Bangura pleaded guilty immediately after the charge was read in court, which the judge noted as a factor in mitigating court time.
In delivering judgment, Hon. Justice Jarrett emphasized the seriousness of the offence and the harmful effects of narcotic drugs on Sierra Leonean youth, considering these factors, she sentenced Bangura to fifteen years’ imprisonment to serve as a deterrent to others.
Additionally, Justice Jarrett ordered that the 50 grams of Kush be destroyed in the presence of the director of public prosecutions (or representative), the deputy master and Registrar of the high court, and other relevant officials, a destruction certificate must be filed with the court within seven working days.
