In a pivotal meeting held at the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, Health Minister Dr. Austin Demby hosted the UK High Commissioner, Lisa Chesney, to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation in the health sector. The meeting, which took place on November 20, 2024, focused on addressing critical health challenges and exploring avenues for enhanced partnership.

Dr. Demby and Ms. Chesney reviewed Sierra Leone’s health priorities, including maternal and child health, disease prevention, and the expansion of health infrastructure. Discussions centered on leveraging UK expertise and resources to accelerate the country’s progress toward achieving universal health coverage.

Senior officials from both the Ministry of Health and the UK High Commission were present, alongside representatives from international health organizations. Their presence highlighted the high stakes of the dialogue and the shared commitment to improving healthcare delivery in Sierra Leone.

The high-level engagement took place at the Ministry of Health and Sanitation headquarters in Freetown. The November 20 event comes at a time when Sierra Leone is intensifying efforts to address post-pandemic health system weaknesses.

The visit underlined the UK government’s continued support for Sierra Leone’s health reforms. Minister Demby highlighted the importance of international collaboration, stating, “Strengthening our partnership with the UK is vital to ensuring sustainable health solutions for our people.”

The dialogue is expected to pave the way for increased financial support, capacity-building initiatives, and the introduction of innovative health technologies. Both parties expressed optimism about a memorandum of understanding that will solidify the partnership in the coming months.

This meeting signals a renewed commitment to health development in Sierra Leone, as the country seeks to improve outcomes and reduce inequities in access to care.
